Our painting services are a great way of transforming the look of your space, but there are still a lot of unknowns and what-ifs about the world of paint. A commonly asked question in the painting sector is when it is okay to use oil paint, so we here at Orange Contracting would like to explain everything you need to know about the medium.
In What Situation Do I Use It?
It is important to note that we are not talking about the more modern versions of oil paint here; we are discussing the old school oil based paints that aren’t considered waterborne. The waterborne oil paints are usually quite good for trims and woodwork, holding up extremely well. They will, in most cases, remove the need of using any type of old oil paint.
This then bears the question: when should old school oil paints be used? The simple answer is wherever your hand makes contact with the wooden surface that you are painting. The oils within your hand end up breaking down any type of water based paint (including the newer oil paints with waterborne components).
A situation that we recommend using these paints in is banisters and hand railings. These surfaces are constantly coming into contact with oily hands. When hand railings are painted with a waterborne type paint, the paint will begin to deteriorate at a fast pace. Old school oil paints, however, dry super hard and last for a very long time when coming into contact with oil. A lot of them have been renamed into what is known as “rust paint” in order to adhere to certain regulations.
Another instance in which old school oil paints are beneficial is kitchen cabinets. Like banisters/hand railings, these cabinets come into contact with hands on a daily basis. Custom made cabinets are a popular item to have in your home, and a hand painted oil finish is considered a common option for those who want it. If your cabinets paint is deteriorating around the handle/on the handle area, consider painting/coating the cabinet in oil paint to minimize fading.
How We Can Help
At the end of the day, the need for old school oil paint is much less significant than it was many years ago, as they have come up with new formulas that are easier to apply/use. Even so, it has its uses when it comes to durability and can be used to your advantage.
