Home Renovation Colour Tips

Home Renovation Colour Tips

When renovating your home, you get to choose what colours are used in each room. This choice is going to determine the mood of the entire room and bring life back into your home. If you are unsure about what colours to pick, our team at Orange Contracting is going to go over some tips to help you choose the best colour scheme for your home.

When it’s time for a colour change, the perfect time to do it is when you are already renovating. You should decide on what colours are used when you are still in the planning phase. The reason for this is that you will need to coordinate your furnishings, walls, fixtures, and light to have the best results.

Perfect Palate Tips

Get a Colour Wheel

This is a basic tool that will come in handy. A standard colour wheel is going to visually organize the way colours naturally combine, blend, and contrast. The colours can also be broken down into different shades as well. It’s important to think about the distribution of your primary, secondary, and accent colours when picking what ones you want to use.

Distributing Colour

When distributing colour in a room, you are going to want to use the basic ratio of 60/30/10. This means having 60% in the dominant colour you want, 30% your secondary colour, and 10% your accent colour.

Before you commit to anything, it’s important that you take your time deciding what to go with. Go to the store and get paint swatches to mix and match on your walls until you are happy with what you have.

Approaches To Use

Complementary

This is when you select colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel. This is the boldest approach, giving you a stark contrast.

Analogous

This is when you select colours that are beside each other on your colour wheel. This allows a mild contrast for your room.

Monochromatic

This is when you can select your favourite colour as the primary colour of your room. Once you have established this, select different shades of this colour as your secondary and accent colours.

Shades

In certain rooms, white and gray are good choices because they have the ability to look lighter or darker depending on what conditions they are in. Since they are considered neutral, you can easily pair them with any other colour you want. If you want to bring out the vibrancy of other colours in a room, having some black furnishings is a great way to do it.

Balancing

Trying to balance warm and dark tones can be hard. When you are picking a colour scheme, you might have to pick between going with either brighter colours or more muted ones and your primary colour. Having some contrast in a room is always a good idea. You can accomplish this by having a fixture or accessory that directly contrasts with the colour scheme of your walls.

Furniture Colour

You can be inspired by the colour of things like your couch, rug, drapery, or a piece of art you have. This can be a starting point for the rest of the room’s colour scheme that you work around. Doing this is going to make sure that the whole room is coordinated and harmonious.

Entire House Colour Change

If you have decided to completely change the colour of every room in your house, a good thing to do is look at the bigger rooms and figure out what you want them to be and work outward from there to the smaller rooms. This means starting with places like the kitchen, entryway, dining room, and living room. Once those colours have been decided, work outwards from there. The reason you want to start with the big rooms is that they are what people see first when coming into your home. Setting the primary colour scheme in these big rooms can help you figure out how to transition colours throughout the rest of your house. A popular thing that people like to do is use neutral colours for the transition rooms because it allows rest points between the spaces with colour.
